Dr. N. K. Sur was the founder Head of the department. At present, Dr. R. C. Mital is Head of the department. Department has ten permanent faculty posts out of which three are vacant. Department has modern lecture theaters with multimedia facilities, well equipped laboratories and project room assisted by workshop. Department has made remarkable progress in teaching. This is evident by its selection for UGC COSIP in 1971. Department has been identified as a STAR DEPARTMENT since 2006 under the College with Potential for Excellence (CPE), the status awarded by UGC. Department has a unique EINSTEIN GALLERY which was established in 2005 to celebrate the World Year of Physics. It highlights the biography of great Physicist Albert Einstein. Department regularly organizes various activities like Dr. S. P. Tewarson memorial debate, Ewing guest lecture series, Educational tour and Competitions under the aegis of Physics Society. Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) has selected the department as a centre for prestigious National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE). The examination is being conducted for last 10 years. The students of the department have scored in TOP 1% at state as well as national level. Faculty members endeavor to bridge the gap between secondary and higher education through different activities. Two medals viz. Dr. R. P. Khare meritorious medal and Smt. Uma Khare memorial medal for a bright boy and a girl respectively are instituted in the department.

Not to say of teaching excellence, the department is moving ahead remarkably in the field of research as well. Radon Radiation Lab, Liquid Crystal Lab and Biophysics Lab are the recently developed research labs. Research facilities include Twin cup radon-thoran dosimeter, Spark counter, Etching bath, Diffrential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Optical microscope. The current fields of research are Radon-Thoran radiation measurement, Image processing, Condensed matter physics, Laser spectroscopy, Liquid Crystal, Biomathematics & Astrophysics. UGC, DST and DAE have sanctioned various research projects. Faculty members have organized many national as well as international conferences. They have published papers in national and international journals of repute. Few of them have been honoured to chair the technical sessions and are included in reviewer panels of peer reviewed journals. Some of them have also published books to their credit.
