The Department of Urdu was established in August 1974.The Department’s aim   is to spread awareness about literary and cultural importance and relevance of the Urdu language and literature and culture in India and around the world. It aims to promote the Urdu language as the language known throughout the world. It aims to promote the Urdu language as the language of knowledge, and Urdu literature as the literature values that can withstand the test of time.

Our objective is to accomplish this by way of motivating and preparing the students for the Graduate studies, imparting quality education at all levels of teaching, preparing students for career and academic world and generating interest in Urdu language and literature at higher levels of learning.

       The syllabus of the UG course is also being revised from time to time as per the recommendations of UGC The department has maintained a good success rate of students, above 90%.The dropout rate is almost negligible. We follow classroom teaching, apart from personal discussions. We are always interested in providing academic and personal counseling to our students.

Proposal for starting PG course in the department is also being sent for approval.

There is a Central Library in the institution with a rich collection of books on different aspects of Urdu Literature. However, the Department has its own small library with about 250 books.
